Antoine d'Abbadie was a French naval officer, explorer, and writer. He also worked as a geographer, archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, naturalist, and artist. D'Abbadie was born into a noble family in Paris, France. He entered the French Navy at the age of fourteen
By age twenty-two d'Abbadie had already served two years on two ships of the French West Indies Fleet. He participated in many voyages to explore the Dominica-Martinique area and other islands. He explored the Caribbean Sea from 1800 to 1801 by ship, based out of Martinique.
In 1801 he sailed to Dominica aboard the frigate Thetis, exploring the eastern coast of that island before returning to France in 1802.
